Charlotte, New York was a station on the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad, which later became part of the New York Central Railroad. Charlotte is where the Genesee River empties into Lake Ontario and many Great Lakes steamboats called on the village.
The Buffalo, Rochester and Pittsburg Railway had a large facility in Charlotte where they loaded freight cars onto their car ferries for trips to and from Cobourg, Ontario.
Charlotte was also known for its beaches and amusement park and was a very popular recreation destination for Rochester residents.
